BERTIE CYCLE - 26 MILES

The Cycle Ride is on the lovely lanes. You start by riding north along the valley bottom before Longfield Hill and Nursted with views across the Thames Estuary. After riding through the Dickensian village of Cobham you will enjoy a wonderful curving descent before taking a long, peaceful lane down to Cuxton and the river Medway.  There is then a climb up to the spectacular HS1-M2 bridge across the Medway towards Rochester (and Bertie’s home).  Then south to Wouldham and Peters Village, and recross the Medway to Snodland.  Then cycle through the quiet villages of Birling and Ryarsh to Trottiscliffe and up a very steep hill onto the top of the North Downs, before a lovely steady descent down Tumblefield Road to Stansted.

Preparation:

  • You must wear a bike helmet.  Without a helmet you will not be permitted to join the ride, as our insurance requires that helmets are worn by all riders at all times on the road.

  • Ideally take your bike to a local bike shop to be serviced before the ride.  Ensure that both brakes work. Clean and oil the chain. Inflate tyres to the pressure stated on the sidewall of your bike tyre.  Also ensure that you carry with you a spare tube in the correct size, as printed on the outside of the tyre.

  • Bring a water bottle.   There will be drinks and snacks at 3 points on the route.

  • A map of the route is also available at https://gb.mapometer.com/cycling/route_4494764.html if you want to look at it, print it out or upload it into your GPS.
